A complete change of scenery from the savannah. Materuni village sits in the green Chagga foothills of Kilimanjaro, where families have grown coffee for generations. You walk through banana and coffee shambas to a waterfall that drops from a fern-covered cliff, roast and pound your own coffee with the village, eat a traditional Tanzanian lunch, and then float in the impossibly clear turquoise water of the Kikuletwa hot springs on the way home.

Day-by-day itinerary

    Materuni, coffee, lunch and Chemka hot springs

    Pick-up at 07:00 in Arusha and the drive towards Moshi and up into Materuni village. A guided walk of roughly 45 minutes through coffee and banana plantations to the waterfall, with time to swim in the cold plunge pool below. Back in the village for the full Chagga coffee experience — picking, peeling, roasting and pounding to the traditional song — followed by a hot local lunch. In the afternoon we drive to the Kikuletwa (Chemka) hot springs to swim in the warm turquoise pools under the fig trees, returning to Arusha around 18:30.

No payment is taken online. We confirm availability and send a written quote in US dollars. A 30% deposit by bank transfer secures your dates, and the balance is payable on arrival in Arusha in cash USD or by transfer. Once your safari is paid, 10% of the total is transferred to the Fruitful Orphanage & Day Care Center and we send you confirmation.

It is about 45 minutes each way on a village path that can be muddy and slippery after rain. Any reasonably fit person can do it in trainers or light hiking shoes; bring a change of clothes if you plan to swim.
Can I do Materuni and Chemka hot springs in the same day?
Yes — that is exactly how we run it. Waterfall and coffee tour in the morning, lunch in the village, then the drive to the Kikuletwa (Chemka) springs in the afternoon, back in Arusha around 18:30.
Do I need park fees for this trip?
No national park fees apply. The price already covers the Materuni village and waterfall fees, the local Chagga guide, the coffee tour and the Chemka hot springs entrance.
