A complete change of scenery from the savannah. Materuni village sits in the green Chagga foothills of Kilimanjaro, where families have grown coffee for generations. You walk through banana and coffee shambas to a waterfall that drops from a fern-covered cliff, roast and pound your own coffee with the village, eat a traditional Tanzanian lunch, and then float in the impossibly clear turquoise water of the Kikuletwa hot springs on the way home.
Pick-up at 07:00 in Arusha and the drive towards Moshi and up into Materuni village. A guided walk of roughly 45 minutes through coffee and banana plantations to the waterfall, with time to swim in the cold plunge pool below. Back in the village for the full Chagga coffee experience — picking, peeling, roasting and pounding to the traditional song — followed by a hot local lunch. In the afternoon we drive to the Kikuletwa (Chemka) hot springs to swim in the warm turquoise pools under the fig trees, returning to Arusha around 18:30.
Meals: Traditional Tanzanian lunch, coffee tasting

Planning
Everyone passes through Arusha and almost nobody plans for it. Two days here make the rest of the trip better.
Culture
A waterfall on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes, coffee roasted by the family who grew it, and an afternoon in water the colour of glass.
Planning
One free day in Arusha is enough for a full safari, a waterfall hike or a swim in turquoise spring water. Here are the six we run most.
