Tanzania vs Kenya Safari: Which Country for Your First Trip?

We are based in Arusha, so we are not neutral — but the honest comparison is more interesting than the sales pitch.

The short answerChoose Tanzania for space, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, and because the migration spends around nine months of the year there. Choose Kenya for lower park fees, shorter drives, easier flight connections and a good beach add-on. Kenya is generally cheaper per day; Tanzania delivers bigger, emptier landscapes.

Both countries share the same ecosystem: the Serengeti and the Masai Mara are one continuous plain divided by a border. The differences are in scale, cost and how the trip feels day to day.

The migration

The herds spend roughly nine months of the year on the Tanzanian side and cross into the Mara only for part of the July to October window. If your trip falls outside those months, Tanzania is the answer; within them, either works, and the Mara River crossings happen on both banks.

Cost

Kenya is usually cheaper day for day, mainly because park fees are lower and the drives are shorter, so you need fewer days for the same number of parks. Tanzania's crater and Serengeti fees are the biggest single line in any northern-circuit quote.

Our own all-inclusive prices from Arusha, per person with two sharing, give you a fixed point to compare any Kenyan quote against:

Park fees, private 4x4, driver-guide, meals and 10% for the Fruitful Orphanage are already inside these prices.

Getting around

Kenya's parks are closer to Nairobi and light-aircraft hops are cheap and frequent. Tanzania's northern circuit is driven: Arusha to Tarangire is two hours, to the crater three, to the central Serengeti six or seven. Those drives are scenic and full of stops, but they are real hours in a vehicle.

Beaches and add-ons

Zanzibar is a short flight from Arusha and is the stronger beach add-on. Kenya's Diani and Watamu are lovely but further from the main parks. Tanzania also has Kilimanjaro, which pairs naturally with a safari and with the Materuni and Chemka day trips.

So which one?

  • ·First safari, one week, want the icons: Tanzania.
  • ·Tight budget or only four or five days: Kenya.
  • ·Travelling July to October and want river crossings: either, with a slight edge to Tanzania for space.
  • ·Want a safari plus a beach: Tanzania with Zanzibar.
  • ·Want a safari plus volunteering with a purpose: Tanzania — that is what we do.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tanzania or Kenya better for a safari?
Tanzania for scale, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater; Kenya for lower fees, shorter drives and easier connections. For a first trip of a week or more, most travellers get more out of Tanzania.
Which is cheaper, a Tanzanian or Kenyan safari?
Kenya, usually, because park fees are lower and drives are shorter so you need fewer days. Tanzania's crater and Serengeti fees are the biggest single line in a northern-circuit quote.
Can I see the Great Migration in Tanzania all year?
Yes. The herds move within Tanzania for roughly nine months of the year and only cross into Kenya's Masai Mara for part of the July to October period.
Can I combine Tanzania and Kenya in one trip?
You can, but two sets of park fees, a border crossing and long transfers eat into the trip. Unless you have two weeks or more, one country done well is the better safari.
